I didn’t really know how to answer that, because I have never thought of myself in that way.

Activism means campaigning for political or social change. When I think of how I came to start Ooh Tees, it makes me realise that yes, I’m an activist. A little tiny activist.

We’ve all got causes that we believe in. Me, I believe that we are running out of time to reverse the damage we’re doing to this earth, and that makes me worry about whether there will even be an earth for future generations.

It’s really easy to think that ‘other’ people will do something to make things better, and that we needn’t contribute because, after all, what sort of impact can one person make? Well, a big impact if they one of many doing the same thing.

Here’s how I started my sustainability journey. Many many moons ago, I volunteered to become a sustainability champion at work. Yep, I’m the one that follows you around turning all the lights off and unplugging everything. I honestly can’t remember how many years ago this was, but it’s got to be more than 10. So, saving energy (amongst other things) at work led to doing it at home - switching lights and sockets off at bedtime, drying clothes outside or on an airer indoors rather than using the tumble dryer etc. Then I progressed to buying a Sodastream so that I could make my own sparkling water instead of buying single use plastic bottles. As the years have gone on, I’ve switched to dissolvable laundry detergent sheets, and I buy my fabric softener in a 5 litre bottle that lasts this family of 4 for a whole year. I try to be diligent about recycling, as well as the usual bottles, cans and paper recycling, I also recycle my aluminium coffee pods, and the discarded coffee goes into a big pot, destined for sprinkling over plants in the garden.

This year began my foray into the world of sustainable clothing. When I found out that around 35% of the clothing you’ll find on racks in the high street ends up in landfill, I was stunned. Even worse, I discovered that manufacture of your bog standard t-shirt uses 700 litres of water (yes, that’s for EACH t-shirt produced). AND that approximately 35% of microplastic fibres shed from synthetic clothing ends up in our oceans. That’s three of the reasons I started Ooh Tees. I’m determined to make my own difference, whilst facilitating others to make a difference too.

Am I an activist? I want things to be better in many different ways. I can’t do it by myself, but when you look at my very small contributions in all these different areas, consider that there are possibly millions of other people out there across the world doing the same or similar things, and collectively we CAN make a difference. So let’s all be our own Little Tiny Activist, and watch the effects snowball and get bigger and bigger over time, so that in one year, two years, ten or twenty we can look back and see how things have changed for the better, and how we were a part of that shift in attitudes and practices.

How to start? Just pick one small thing where you can make a positive change, and go for it. No need to suddenly become a card-carrying activist all at once. We’re in this for the long haul, one step at a time.

Kate x

From the Very Start, Plants.
